Goal Setting Tips

2021 is finally here, and as we say good riddance to 2020 we want to focus on our goals for the upcoming year. Goal setting can be an intimidating process. What target is attainable? How will I be able to achieve these lofty expectations I am putting upon myself? These are some of the questions you might be asking yourself currently.

Goal setting can be a challenge even for people who routinely make goals for themself. It can be difficult to know where to start, what is attainable, and how to keep yourself accountable. Here are some tips to help you start the new year with your objectives and how to maintain them throughout the year.

Start Big-

Sometimes the process of coming up with goals can be the most difficult part about goal setting. People ask the question, “Where do I start?” which is completely normal. The easiest way to do this is to start with your bigger goals. Where do you want to be in a year from now? Once you answer this question you can begin setting up a plan to achieve your large goal. This will lead to smaller goals. For example, my overall goal is to lose 20 lbs by December 1st, 2021. Now that we have our big goal, we need to set small goals to achieve the 20 lbs weight loss. An example could be that you want to meal prep every week, or limit your calorie intake to 2,000/day. These smaller goals will help you stay on track and reach your larger goal by the deadline you set.

Be Specific-

One of the most important aspects of goal setting is to be specific. If you have a very broad goal it can be more difficult to obtain. Saying that you want to increase sales, that you want to lose weight, or you wish to learn more about coding is too general of topics. Specifying clearly that you wish to increase sales by 30%, you want to lose 20 lbs, or you want to learn about data compression coding gives you a specific and attainable target for you to reach.

Set Dates-

Setting dates falls under the “be specific” aspect of goal setting. The issue that many people encounter is that they do not specify a particular end date for obtaining their goals. Giving yourself a time frame allows you to plan what objectives need to be completed daily, weekly, or monthly to achieve your target. A good example would be, “I plan on lifting 225 lbs on the bench press in 3 months”. Setting a date holds you accountable for your goal which will always help you achieve it in the end.

Expect Failure-

One of the most difficult obstacles to overcome when you’re in the process of obtaining your goals is failure. Temptation can be a challenge, life events will get in the way, and you will have problems that will arise along the way. Failure during some of the smaller goals will occur. You might miss a workout, eat too much one day, or have no time to read about data compression coding because you’re too busy. This is so important to remember: IT IS OK TO FAIL! Most people do not obtain their goals because they let failure get in the way. However, failure is inevitable in some form during this process. The key is in how you respond to your failures will dictate how you achieve your end goal. In the moments that we fail our goals we need to remember that we still need to move forward. Being positive in the moments where we meet failure is difficult but necessary to achieving our overall goals.
